MESSAGES of condolences are pouring in for nine people who died in an accident between a taxi and a bakkie in Ibisi outside Umzimkhulu on February 14.

It is alleged that the taxi was carrying people who were going home from work at Rietvlei Hospital.

At the scene, eight people were declared dead and one died later. Other victims are being treated in hospital.

Social workers from Umzimkhulu are providing counselling to relatives of the deceased.

Umzimkhulu Local Municipality Mayor Mphuthumi Mpabanga said the municipality has spoken to the relatives of the victims and resolved to have a joint memorial service, but said the families asked to bury their loved ones independently.

“The government is going to assist families to bury their loved ones and the accident has left a deep wound on many people in Umzimkhulu,” said Mpabanga.

Taxi industry officials from Umzimkhulu visited the affected families to give their support on Saturday. The Road Accident Fund also promised to assist the affected families when they submit claims.

The victims include Mgcini Sosibo (33), Nomthandazo Pungula (27), Zimbini Mcwera (29) and Mile Mcwera (18), domestic worker Bongeka Mkhulisi (38) and two Rietvlei Hospital staff members Bulelani Siswana (35) and Sbongile Nguse (46).

The taxi driver, Lonwabo Jauza (27), is also among the deceased and the name of the last victim was not available at the time of going to press.
