JENET Mbhele (23) from Umzimkhulu is training hard to win a 21 km race when she represents South Africa in the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Half Marathon Championships in Spain on March 24.

Harry Gwala District Municipality Mayor Mluleki Ndobe gave her R25 000 as a gift and wished her all the best.

On Sunday, she ran the Harry Gwala District Marathon’s 10 km race and finished in 36:23. She said the district marathon was a training exercise to get fit for Spain.

In 2012, she met her coach Thamsanqa Khuboni, who introduced her to many competitions.

“I won a gold medal after I ran a 21 km in the U23 category in Cape Town. I represented South Africa in the 21km race in Madagascar in 2016, and last year I ran a 21 km race in Namibia,” said Mbhele.

She encouraged young people to participate in sport to stay healthy and fit. “To stay fit, I eat lots of fruit and I don’t smoke or drinking alcohol,” said Mbhele.
When she was asked about what makes her successful, she said it is discipline and responsibility.

“When my coach gives me instructions, I make sure that I stick to the instructions even if he is not around me,” Mbhele said.
