MANY pupils go to school barefoot, with some wearing old shoes and torn uniforms because of their poor backgrounds, which often means they perform badly at school.

An 11-year-old Grade 4 Kokstad Public School pupil, who lives in Horseshoe with his unemployed mother, was seen by Fever journalist wearing old shoes and torn trousers.
During Mandela Day celebrations Greater Kokstad Municipality workers under Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union handed over full uniforms to five pupils identified by the school.

Principal Aubrey Mkhize said 80% of young pupils have low self-esteem because of their poor background.

“Many of them come from homes where there is no income. Others come from disadvantaged homes that depend on social grants.”

IMATU chairperson Nonzukiso Juqu told Fever that the union is not only oncerned about labour issues, it has a responsibility to change people’s lives.
She said the uniforms given to pupils were donated by union members.

“As the union we know that there are children who go to school without shoes.
“We have decided to do something to change people’s lives.”

IMATU also donated school uniform to 10 Shayamoya School pupils.
