EAST Griqualand and Usher Memorial Hospital employee Thembisa Nxokweni was awarded a certificate and trophy at the MEC’s Annual Service Excellence Awards (Masea) at Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban on 2 June.

Nxokweni, a maternity and children’s ward matron, won the Best Performing Employee of the Year award.
Hospital CEO, Nomawethu Binase said the hospital is pleased with the performance of Nxokweni, matrons and staff.

Fever spoke to Nxokweni about her award and she thanked colleagues and hospital management for working with her at the hospital.
Margate-born Nxokweni used to work at the Port Shepstone Regional Hospital, but moved to EG and Usher Hospital in 2014.

“When I came to Kokstad I developed a partnership with neighbouring hospitals regarding the transfer of patients and the partnership has produced good results. I also implemented a programme that trains staff to improve their services,” said Nxokweni.

Nxokweni says she thinks she won the trophy because she promoted a programme that encourages home visits and promotes healthy living.

“I always tell pregnant women to eat healthy food and as a result there has been a decrease in the number of babies and mothers dying in the maternity ward.
“This award motivates me to work harder,” said Nxokweni.

Nxokweni was joined by colleagues, the hospital CEO, Nomawethu Binase, and MEC of Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo.
