THE Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency donated 23 Plains zebra, 10 Red hartebeest and 10 Black wildebeest to Ongeluksnek Nature Reserve in Matatiele on Tuesday.

The animals were previously kept at the Oviston Nature Reserve in the Eastern Cape.
Hosia Maibelo, Ongeluksnek rescue manager said the animals were abundant in the area in the 1840s, but have since disappeared.

“Historically, the area was a hunting ground for the Khoi and San people and many animals left the area for safety. At the moment we are bringing the animals back to their original place so they can thrive,” said Maibelo.

The nature reserve wants people and schools to visit the area to view animals. Five field rangers, one section ranger and rangers will be employed to protect them.

Fire and rescue workers are also employed to protect the environment.
Maibelo said the nature reserve needs protection from community members and community leader, Mothibisi Lebenya said people will protect the animals from poachers.

The Ongeluksnek Nature Reserve is near the South Africa and Lesotho border and animals are free to move everywhere.
