Women must stand up and fight

2016-10-28 06:00

THOSE who rejected the idea that Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma should be the ANC president on the basis that she was married to Jacob Zuma are suffering from stupidity and patriarchy.
There is no historical tradition where members and leaders of the ANC had ever been defined on the basis of their personal relationships or spouses.

Once the ANC allows this shallow thinking it might as well dump the struggle for women emancipation and allow itself to be defined as a sexist organisation.
Nelson Mandela was a president of the ANC and Winnie Nomzama Madikizela-Mandela was the ANCWL president and no one raised any objections.

I trust those who judged Dlamini-Zuma with her private relationship with Zuma had not forgotten that at the ANC National Conference in 2007 at Polokwana, Dlamini-Zuma was contesting to be deputy president against the preferred Zuma, which proved that she is an independent cadre of the movement.

Also with her roles starting with moving from the health department to home affairs and foreign affairs as a minister in all these departments without being deputised by Zuma proves that her uncontested political track record has nothing to do with her aborted marriage to Zuma.

Charles and Nosiviwe Mapisa Nqakula were ministers in the same cabinet, Jabu and Geraldine Fraiser-Moleketi were ministers in the same cabinet, why where there no concerns when they got married and were both in cabinet? This is all about a movement that is degenerating.
If President Jacob Zuma could be elected as president of the ANC based on his expertise and membership of the ANC and be judged on those, why can’t Dlamini-Zuma can't be elected as the ANC president on the same principals?

We must never allow new tendencies to destroy the ANC. If Dlamini-Zuma is not capable of being president, it must never be based on her relationship with Zuma, but on the capabilities required to be president of the ANC.

Women must stand up and fight this as it seeks to reverse the struggle for women emancipation.
