Women’s challenges discussed at dialogue

2018-06-29 06:01

AT a Commonwealth Women Parliament Dialogue Session, held in Matatiele this past week, problems that rural women are faced with were discussed and addressed by representatives.

Speaking at the dialogue, Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature speaker Noxolo Kiviet said many women faced challenges of drug and alcohol abuse within their families and,as a result, sometimes these homes are broken.

She called on women to unite in the fight for a better country.

The three-day dialogue opened on Monday, with engagements amongst rural women of Matatiele followed by educational speeches and resolutions to problems that were identified.

“Women need to follow in the footsteps of Mama Winnie Madikizela Mandela, Albertina Sisulu and other women who fought for freedom and defended democracy,” said Kiviet.

The Commonwealth Women Parliament was established by the constitution of Commonwealth Parliament Association in the African Region in 1989 with the aim of increasing the number of women representatives in Parliaments and Legislatures across commonwealth countries.

It intended to expand accountability of the leadership across the spectrum on women representation and mobilise active participation of women in government programmes.

“To host this dialogue in the small town of Matatiele will be helpful to rural women,” said Matatiele Local Municipality mayor Momelezi Mbedla.

Members from Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature, National Parliament, international representatives attended.
