AS part of celebrating National Women’s Day, women from across the country have spoken in one voice towards achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment. They commemorated Women’s Day at various events, with some of the women wearing doeks in observing the day.

Women who work for Matatiele Local Municipality also wore doeks to work on Wednesday to recognise the extraordinary acts of women and to show unity. They endorsed gender equality and united power.

According to South African Communist Party (SACP) Thembisile Hani District’s Zoliswa Nyide, women need to be empowered in all government and private sectors. Speaking at a media briefing held by the party in Kokstad last Sunday, she encouraged women to stand together to fight for gender equality.

“We need women who will be capacitated to hold leadership positions,” she said.

Mount Currie Circuit 114 United Methodist Church yesterday (Wednesday) opened a women’s conference in Kokstad Town Hall that will end on Sunday. Empowerment speeches and motivations will be delivered by various speakers at the conference. Members of the church from all provinces are set to attend.

Greater Kokstad Municipality announced a women’s summit would be held under the theme Celebrating 100 Years of Albertina Sisulu, Women United in Moving South Africa Forward. The summit will be held at Bhongweni Youth Centre on August 16 and August 17.

Some of the topics that will be discussed include financial literacy of women, women in leadership, fighting against teenage pregnancy, gender-based violence and child abuse.
