WOMEN from the rural KwaMbotho village near Harding were awarded at the Ithala Imbokodo Iyazenzela SMME awards in Durban last Wednesday.

The women, members of a 19-member co-operation, formed Mgijimu Chemicals that manufactures cleaning chemicals and toilet paper, which are then sold to schools, shops and the community.

They won R20 000, a trophy and a certificate for Best Imbokodo IyazenzelaWomen.

The co-op chairperson, Ncane Skhosana, said the organisation was formed in 2009 to fight poverty and create employment.

She said members have shown potential and are “doing it for themselves” regardless whether they get government support or not.

Skhosana said she heard former KZN Premier Zweli Mkhize on the radio encouraging women to start businesses and manufacture cleaning chemicals and toilet paper.

“Members received training and machines from Umuziwabantu Local Municipality,” said Skhosana.

The women said the R20 000 would be spent on a fence around their co-op to ward off would-be criminals.

Umuziwabantu Local Municipality mayor Dixie Nciki congratulated the women.
