KOKSTAD-BORN Khaya Mkatu (25) appears to have an inherent entrepreneurial gift because he is establishing himself as a maestro in all things musical and arty.

Mkatu is the director and founder of Burgundi Press Play, a company that is to launch it's website which will be a platform from which the public can download music, videos, graphics and pictures.

It also signs and manages artists and is currently managing the biggest hip-hop group in Kokstad, KSDK.

Mkatu says he will be launching his company website at a festival from 30 November to 6 December, which will include a workshop, KSDK homecoming event and the Miss Kokstad pageant.

“The concept of this website was born after I noticed a need to bridge the gap between artists and their market. The website will set a precedence in the IT and telecommunications world as no website of this nature has been developed in Africa. It will be a great convenience for people who love music.”

The website will also feature an online store where people can buy accessories used in arts and music, such as earphones.

“These days you find that artists have to get into big distribution deals with big distribution companies at a cost in order for their products to get to the public, so this initiative basically makes things easier for the public and the artists,” Mkatu said.

Speaking about the homecoming event of KSDK, Mkatu said the group, which has been in existence for almost 10 years, has never performed in Kokstad, and will be the main act at the festival.

“Since Kokstad is the home town of all KSDK members, we figured that it's necessary that we host an event where KSDK will be the main act, and it will also be their year-end performance,” he said.

“We are rebranding KSDK, we are developing a fresh image for the group. We want KSDK to be ambassadors for Kokstad. We want all young people, especially from townships, to look up to KSDK, to see them as role models and be inspired by them to go for their goals,” he said.

At the workshops people from industries related to music, such as music journalism, web and graphic design, photography and videography sound engineering and music production will be presented.

Entertainment will start on Friday with a pre-party. Saturday will be the main day in which the launch and homecoming will be held.
