‘You’re never too old to learn’

2018-08-17 06:00

A 53-YEAR-OLD Bulwer woman who believes that you are never too old to study will sit for her Grade 12 final exams this year.

Thandiwe Bhede, from Ntokozweni village, is studying under Adult Education and Training (AET) and attends classes in the afternoon at Pholela/Marwaqa Teacher Development Centre.

The centre offers workshops to teachers from nearby schools and also aims to equip illiterate young people with skills. Local people that have registered under AET also attend classes and write exams at the centre.

Bhede is the eldest women in her class but that has never stopped her from trying to achieve her goal.

“Because of my lack of knowledge, I decided to return to school to complete my education and become exemplary to young people. “Most youth don’t like education — once they fail a class, they think of using drugs and alcohol and that destroys their future,” said Bhede.

She said, after completing her matric, she wants to train in business studies as her livelihood comes from selling sweets and fruit on the street corner.

Bhede says she always encourages and motivates others to complete or further their studies.

“At local meetings, I always motivate people to get educated for the benefit of the country.

“Two local women are doing matric this year after they heard my teachings about the importance of education,” she said.
