Youth gets 12 months for sex with donkey

THE Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) welcomed the 12-month sentenced handed down to Ntando Mankungwini (23), who pleaded guilty to having sex with a donkey.

Mankungwini of Moreneng village near Mount Fletcher was sentenced by the Mount Fletcher Magistrate’s Court last week.
According to his plea explanation presented through his attorney, he committed the act at 4pm on September 20. He came across a drove of donkeys and herded two to an isolated area where he had sex with one of them.

In a media statement by National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Mankungwini was caught in the act by the grandson of the donkey owner who had given chase thinking that Mankungiwini was stealing the donkeys.
The young man raised the alarm and the community chased Mankungwini and attempted to assault him, but the owner of the donkeys rescued him and called the police, who arrested him.

At his first court appearance he pleaded guilty, saying that his traditional healer had instructed him to commit the offence so he could become a stronger man.
NPA Regional Spokesperson Luxolo Tyali said the sentence is welcomed by the NPA.

A statement from the SPCA spokesperson, Jaco Pieterse, said that hurting animals is a concern for the SPCA and they called on communities to report such acts and cruelty towards animals.
“The SPCA welcomes the sentence and says it will send a strong message to people who hurt animals. We thank the court for treating the case in a serious manner,” said Pieterse.

He said people must report cruelty to animals to their local SPCA office.
