Youthful views

WHILE my school-leaving son sits on a beach in New Zealand contemplating his future, I began recalling all the hilarious, innocent things he said to me as a young child.

The first that springs to mind was his comment at a birthday lunch when he picked up a prawn noticing its protruding eyes. He said it so loudly that people at other tables heard and laughed: “Look Mom, this one died of fright.”

Another time, when I showed him pictures of fashion models in a fashion magazine, he said: “They look like they have been put on a rack and stretched, like what they did to people in medieval times.”

I also recall the feeling of what I can only term “humorous discomfort” when we sat down to have roast chicken and he asked: “Is this a dead bird?”

You can imagine the dampener that put on the meal.

I miss my gap-year-taking son already, but my reply, in case you are wondering, to all those amusing remarks was: “Yes, you‘re quite right.”
