THE South African Police Service in Pietermaritzburg has warned drivers to follow safety measures when parking their car.

The Pietermaritzburg SAPS reported that a high percentage of the recently reported cases pertaining to theft from cars in the CBD and surrounding areas is due to negligence and carelessness.

Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said a number of reported thefts out of cars occur without any forced entry, which indicates that suspects are using jamming devices on the vehicle’s locking system when the driver activates the alarm.

“Drivers must keep doors locked at all times. Valuable items such as laptops and cameras should not be left in the car but should be placed in the boot.

“Do not open the windows for hawkers along the road and at the traffic lights and don’t use cellphones while driving, unless the driver has a hands-free kit.

“Luggage must be stored in the boot, out of sight. Don’t leave a handbag or briefcase in the car and leaving keys in the ignition must be avoided at all times,” said Jeevan.

She warned that doors must be locked and closed when getting out of the car.

“Remove detachable radios and the radio face when getting out of the car. Drivers must try to fit an alarm or anti-theft device in their vehicle.

“Parking lots with a parking attendant or supervision or someone patrolling are the best, otherwise try to park in locations that are well lit,” she said
