FROM a young age Yena Khuboni knew she was born to empower people especially women and being one of the 30 Miss Commonwealth SA semi-finalists is a dream come true for the 27 year-old Witwatersrand B.Com graduate.

Miss Commonwealth SA runs and produces Miss Teen and Mr and Mrs. Commonwealth SA pageants annually.

The competition runs over five months in search of winners who represent South Africa in London at the Miss Commonwealth International every year.

Khuboni comes from Impendle, but was raised in Hammarsdale Extension 6. Two years ago she entered Miss Earth and she believes her exposure in that pageant opened doors for her.

“I am an auditor and model part-time. I have always loved modelling, but my short height has been an issue. I am grateful for the opportunity and am positive I will make it to the end.

“What I like most about the pageant is that it aims at empowering and uplifting the youth and women. I believe that the future of our country lies on our hands. I prayed about this and have faith that things will work my way,” said Khuboni.

She has already gone through the screening and question sessions which worked well for her.

“There are only 30 of us from all nine provinces, and we will be competing for finalist. I find joy in improving and empowering the lives of others. Knowing that I have added value to one’s life and/or created joy in one’s heart is my ultimate satisfaction. My greatest reward is hearing the words ‘thank you’ when giving to those who have nothing to give in return.”
