MAYBE not a good and an unconvincing start to the league by Maritzburg United could be a blessing in disguise and could mean a potential excellent Cup run.

If South African history books and statistics are anything to go by, the Team of Choice might surprise a lot of people this season.

Although United’s start to the season looks uncertain and gloomy their run in the silverware department has the potential to make them turn the corner.

Before the start of the season the local outfit’s head coach, Steve “ Mphathi” Komphela, was dumped and his assistant, Mandla Ncikazi, took over.

However, after four games he was shifted out of the picture and United’s former captain, Fadlu Davis, was appointed caretaker coach.

Last Friday the former Bafana Bafana coach and well-travelled Clive Barker was officially appointed as the new head coach.

Unfortunately, Barker received a baptism of fire when his team lost 4-1 to Mpumalanga Black Aces. During the game, and at one stage the PMB outfit were leading 1-0, all hell broke loose when AmaZayoni gallantly fought back to overpower them.

United’s publicist, Brian Zuma, says although their campaign in the league may look unconvincing, everything was in control and United will soon turn the corner.

Zuma says Cup games are always full of surprises and are unpredictable.

United will tomorrow face Jomo Cosmos at Harry Gwala Stadium at 8pm during the last 16 of this year’s Telkom Knock Out.

Ezenkosi spokesman, Lucky Mhlathe, says his team will come to Pietermaritzburg with one mission in mind. Mhlathe said their bad form or start in the league will be thrown out of the window when they meet United.

“We will treat the clash as a Cup game and throw everything at them because our aim is to qualify for the next round in this competition.”

United’s start to the new season may be taken as one of the worse, but don’t be surprised if the local lads turn the tables against the visitors.

Telkom Knockout fixtures:

Maritzburg United vs Jomo Cosmos, at Harry Gwala Stadium at 8pm

Free State Stars vs Bidvest Wits at Goble Park Stadium at 3pm, Golden Arrows vs Ajax Cape Town, at King Zwelithini Stadium at 3pm, Mamelodi Sundowns vs Chippa United at Lucas Moripe Stadium at 8:15pm
