Celebrating Mandela Day in sports

2015-07-09 06:00

WHILE some will engage themselves in cleaning and giving as part of celebrating Mandela Day on 18 July, WhizzKids United Health Academy will celebrate this day by educational and creative activities.

The event with be held on 17 July at Edendale Hospital where the academy is located.

WhizzKids United uses the power of football and interactive activities to transform the lives of disadvantaged young people by encouraging them to make positive health, education and employment decisions, said WhizzKids partner liaison manager Caroline.

“We believe every young person should have an opportunity to achieve their potential,” she said.

Sculley said the event will start at 10am.

“It will include a range of health, educational and creative activities, as well as a football match on our own Fifa Football for Hope pitch.

“These activities will include HIV/Aids awareness talks, creation of a Mandela-inspired mural, football drills and team-building tasks.

“The aim of the event is to celebrate and learn from the legacy of Madiba, while encouraging young people to engage with the health academy and access our services including HIV testing and counselling.

“We hope to have at least 50 young people attending the event,” said Sculley.

Companies are invited to get involved either by coming along on the day or through the donation of care package items such as school supplies, toiletries and canned food, which can be distributed to the young people.

“If you would like to get involved please let us know by 14 July at the latest. No matter how small the action, Mandela Day is about changing the world for the better, just as Madiba did,” she said.
