WITH just a few days left before the Nelson Mandela Marathon, those wanting to participate have only until 10 August to send through their online and manual applications.

Umgungundlovu District Municipal Mana gerSbusiso Khuzwayo said so far a huge surge of online and manual applications have come through. The race, on 30 August between Imbali and the Howick Capture Site, will be presided by a trail-running and mountain-biking race on 29 August. The race is expected to draw about 13 000 athletes and will be divided into three distances - 42.2km race, a 21.2km race and a 10km. A number of elite and professional runners, including household names from various countries, will be competing for the R1,3 million prize money­.

“This year’s marathon will be characterised by a variety of sporting codes, including a triathlon, trail running and mountain biking. The uMgungundlovu District Municipality, in partnership with KwaZulu-Natal, calls on all South African citizens and the international community to keep running the legacy of Madiba by bringing families and friends to the event.”

A press release from the KZN Mountain Biking Association said the improved mountain-bike races will be held in the forests surrounding the Nelson Mandela Capture Site. The overall prize for the trail-running and mountain-biking race has been increased to R120 000. Online pre-entries for the Mandela Marathon Mountain Biking dash close on 26 August. Late entries will be accepted during registration at Greg Minaar Cycles, Town Bush Road on 28 and 29 August.
