THERE is a difference between miracles and magic and it is obvious we are living in challenging times, said Bishop Vusi Dube, from eThekwini Community Church.

This comes after a Pretoria prophet, Penuel Mnguni of End Times Disciples Ministries, made headlines for allegedly feeding members of his church snakes believing they would turn into chocolate.

The Tshwane SPCA confirmed last week that they were going to open a case of animal cruelty against him.

Mnguni was arrested and was released on R1 500 bail.

Bishop Dube said people must be careful of the current incidents.

“We are aware that people are desperate and want good in their lives. My advice would be, let the Bible be your source of information.

“Let us look at the scriptures and take it from there. People are hungry for fame and will do anything to lure and attract people. There is no scripture in the Bible that links God and eating snakes, rats, grass or drinking petrol.

“What if these things cause major damage to a person’s system? These incidents insult genuine pastors who are committed. Some of us are spreading the word of God with meaning and with these incidents people lose faith in us,” said Dube.

“Desperation is a trap - people are desperate for good jobs and success in life,” said Gods Victory Family Church pastor Trevor Phoswa.

“The church is about worshipping God and praying.

“It’s the end times and we are the generation that is alive to witness what the holy book says.

“The holy book says it all. What we are seeing happening is wrong and unacceptable.

“The pastor is not God, he is the link to God. Having people being fed snakes is wrong. The task that is given to a pastor is to preach the word of God,” said Phoswa.

Last year pastor Lesego Daniel from Rabboni Centre Ministries told his congregation to eat grass. In the other incident his church members church drank petrol saying it tasted like pineapple juice.

At the time of going to press the case against Mnguni had been withdrawn
