D-Day for Sobantu Shooting Stars

2015-06-11 06:01

THE old soccer Mecca around the Greater Pietermaritzburg area, Wadley Stadium, is expected to be packed to the rafters on Saturday at 3pm.

Two local football crowd-pullers and most-liked teams, Sobantu Shooting Stars and Maritzburg City, will lock horns at this oldest local stadium.

Both outfits are campaigning in the KZN Safa second division, popularly known as ABC Motsepe League.

Amajuba Adl’ukhetho (Sobantu S. Stars) started this season’s campaign on fire, and were in the top three bracket most of the season. They are also log leaders with 63 points.

Stars director Jabulani “Majay” Radebe this week said their fixture against City will mean “heaven and earth” because it’s a must-win in order to make sure they qualify for the national play-offs.

It is open secret that Stars and City are traditional local arch-rivals and their matches always produce fireworks.

“There are a lot of factors that make these two teams popular and crowd-pullers in local soccer circles. We are one of the oldest teams around the Greater Pietermaritzburg area.

“Both teams are also carrying a lot of history and pride.

“Winning the game on Saturday will mean a lot to us because it will confirm three points that will take us to the promised land of honey and milk.

“We are not saying we are the best in the league, but we were able to stay focused and kept our heads above water,” said Radebe.

Radebe says all players need to be applauded for their outstanding efforts and team work for the entire season.

He says Quincy Kagiso Ngcobo, Jethro Masuku, Lindokuhle Holiday and Themba Dlamini (captain) played outstanding roles in ensuring the good performance streak of the club.

The Glamour Boys’ head coach and former Orlando Pirates and SAU23 star midfielder Andile “S’guta” Cele says fans will witness one of the best matches in local football.

“Pietermaritzburg is known to be a soccer-mad community and produce unique players.

“Both teams look good and fans will enjoy one of the best games in local fixtures,” said Cele
