LOVE, passion and direction are the driving forces to success, says stage performer, TQ Zondi.

With his cousin Mpilo Nzimande, the pair are making a name for themselves in the theatre.

Zondi said both of them are driven by their love and passion for performing. They have been acting professionally for five years.

“We would have not gotten this far if it wasn’t for the support from the people of Pietermaritzburg and our families.

“They have been behind us on this journey from the start. Performing is an art and there is a lot that is in there, starting from the creation and planning of a show.

“Starting a show from the beginning requires research. When we decide on a topic we have to conduct our own research. That means if we have to speak to people we have to do that. Like any other careers. there are challenges. Theatre has its days - one has to understand that it is not always about performing,” said Zondi.

“As much as it is fun, one has to study for it.

“Knowing more about performing and understanding the theory is crucial. It helps to engage yourself in something you understand. Getting money should not be an issue when you have just started.

“Once you are familiar with what you do, you can begin focusing on income. Both Nzimande and I have had our highlights. Performing for Athol Fugard in a play that was written by him and John Kani was one of those highlights,” said Zondi.

Nzimande and Zondi will be performing The Island and Tales from the Termite at the festival on Saturday at 3pm and Sunday at 1pm
