AN Elandskop family had a lucky escape after their six- roomed house was burnt down on Thursday night allegedly due to a power surge.

House owner Busisiwe Madlala said the family is lucky to be alive as the incident happened while they were asleep.

Although Ward 8 councillor Bethwell Ngcobo has organised for a low-cost house to be built in the meantime, the family is currently living with neighbours. Madlala said the family of five are only left with the clothes they were wearing at the time, after everything burnt including identity documents and birth certificates.

She said two family members were sent to hospital after sustaining minor burns, but are now in a stable condition.

“The incident happened at about 9pm when we were asleep. Prior to that we had load shedding and decided to go to sleep because there was nothing else to do. In the middle of my sleep I inhaled smoke and woke up the family in their bedrooms and we tried to put out the fire. When we were outside we remembered that my six-year-old granddaughter had been left inside and her mother had to fetch her. With the help of community members we managed to put out the fire.”

Madlala said the estimated damage is R350 000
