BEING allowed to make one phone call a month to family and friends in 10 months is nothing compared to the golden opportunity of travelling to America from this month until to June 2016, said 16-year-old Akhona Mkhize.

Akhona, from Esigodini location, is one of the two Voortrekker High School pupils who have been granted temporal U.S. citizenship for 10 months on a student exchange programme.

Akhona got involved in the programme by filling in forms they were given at school last year.

“The application forms were given to every grade pupils. After we had applied we were then given a topic to write about. Since this happened last year I can’t remember my topic. Again we were selected and attended classes which told us what the exchange programme is about.

“Next Tuesday we will be going to America. We will stay for 10 months where we will exchange knowledge and views. It will be my first time in America and I am very excited about the experience. We will only be allowed to make one phone call to our family [during that time],” Akhona said.

She is involved with an organisation called American Field Service, and asked what she wants to learn from the American side, she said: “It will depend on what the Americans offer me. If they offer me something that is worth conveying to others I will share that with my fellow South Africans. I am also willing to teach them about our culture and things they might be interested in. The aim is to exchange information and knowledge and that is what I am going to do.”

Her mother, Thandeka Mkhize, said the family is very happy.

“We are happy she will be representing South Africa. We thank all those who supported her from the family side and our church St James in Esigodini,” said Thandeka.

Akhona is also part of Edendale Film Actors, a local film company owned by Mondli Makhaye
