Farewell and good luck to Stevie G

2015-05-21 06:00

DESPITE not being a qualified coach and having a lack knowledge on technical matters of the game, one thing I know is that I am very passionate about it and a diehard.

Some of you are aware that I am a Liverpool follower and even when things are tough in life I always motivate myself by saying “You’ll will never walk alone”.

This week there are two things that really disturbed me and broke my heart. To see the long-serving member of Liverpool, the captain and evergreen Steven Gerrard calling it a day, was a big blow.

Also to see the Sharks going down again was like a nightmare.

I am sure that most Liverpool supporters are really puzzled and left with a lot of questions, just like me.

Gerrard was in a class of his own, a marvel to watch, a leader, a fighter and a winner, on and off the field.

He was just not an ordinary player. To see him bowing out during his final game was just unbelievable and a tough lump to swallow.

I really felt it for Stevie G and for “Livers” followers everywhere.

The occasion was witnessed on Saturday afternoon during the game because it was as though the entire country came to a standstill to bid farewell to the big man and midfield kingpin.

Although it was a big and emotional day for Gerrard he told supporters he was “devastated” about leaving the club during a heartfelt on-pitch address after his final game at Anfield.

Gerrard (34), will join Los Angeles Galaxy in July after almost 17 years at his home-town club and following a 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace. He paid an emotional tribute to Liverpool fans.

“It felt very strange. I’ve been dreading this moment. I’m going to miss it so much,” he told the crowd.

“I’ve loved every minute. I’m absolutely devastated I’m never going to play in front of these supporters again.

“I’d like to thank everyone at the club who’s helped me over the last 17 years. There are too many people to name.

“I thank all my team-mates, all the ex-players. They’ve made me the player I am today.

“I’ll save the last thanks for the most important people at the football club - these supporters stand out more than anyone.”

He was interrupted by cheers and applause from the fans, before continuing.

“Before I go, before the tears come, I’ve played in front of most supporters around the world, but let me tell you, you’re the best.”

In any case life goes on and life is unpredictable. Liverpool was there before Stevie G and will carry on without him.

One of my mentors in the journalism world said: “Players come and go and the same applies to careers, journalists will always come and go, but life will stay the same and interesting to master it.”

Farewell, goodbye Steven Gerrard, we will miss you and all the best in your career in another league
