For the love of music and business

UP-AND-COMING Pietermaritzburg-based artists’ manager and promoter Lungile Dube needs public votes following her two nominations for the Independent National Gospel Awards, otherwise known as Ingoma Awards, to be held on 16 May at the State Theatre in Gauteng at 5.30pm.

The awards target the entertainment and media industry, and Dube has been nominated for best media personality and best gospel promoter award.

Born in the rural Mpangeni, Dube said she has always liked music and is currently managing Sandile Khawula who recently released an album titled Isimanga Somuntu. Khawula is also this year’s nominee for the Ingoma Awards in the best producer and best sound engineer for the album categories.

She is also managing Isaiah Mbonambi who became the 2014 best newcomer at the South African Volunteer Awards.

“I am also assisting upcoming artists such as Nqobile Mbandlwa, the 2015 nominee for the Ingoma Awards for best street promo artist, Themba Gumede, Mlu Ndwalane and Mthoko Nkosi.

“On the side of professional documentation I have worked with doing proposals, profiles and a biography for Sgwili Zuma, a gospel artist, Thulani Gah Ndlela, kwaito artist Msawawa Dlamini, UMgungundlovu FM radio personality Trevor Phoswa and poet Mxolisi Ntobeko Mtshali, to name a few.”

She started off as an artists’ promoter in 2012 in Johannesburg. She holds a B.Com degree in IT from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and also works as a business analyst.

“Being a nominee for the Ingoma Awards means a lot to me and my team. The industry is mainly male-dominated and I am proud that I have been able to make my mark.”

Dube said the road has been tough but she manages to carry on.

“Sometimes I take the artists to events and due to unforeseen circumstances they end up not performing. Being a promoter is challenging as you have to make sure you get events that can help the artist put food on his or her table,” she said.

Her motivation is radio personality and entrepreneur, Sibusiso Leope, known as DJ Sbu.

“I look up to DJ Sbu. He has passion for what he does and does not look down on people.

“There are many things that musicians are not aware of when it comes to taking their music to the next level. It is not only about releasing albums and singing on stage.”

To vote for Dube in both categories, SMS Ingoma best media personality Lungile Dube or Ingoma best gospel promoter Lungile Dube to 34050.

Public voting closes on Sunday 3 May
