Government must honour all in the struggle

2015-06-25 06:01

THE ANC continuously sings its own praises about its liberation credentials at the expense of the masses whose lives it has not transformed for their involvement in freedom.

The ruling party assumes full responsibility for our democracy and when the recent xenophobic attacks caught it off guard, the ANC scurried to pay lip service to our neighbours for their contribution.

There is another significant area in which the ANC is a total failure - it makes no concerted effort to place high on its agenda a real effort to educate the majority about the role that minorities inside South Africa played in the struggle.

At another level, many white South Africans’ role in admonishing apartheid can never be erased. They too assisted to liberate South Africa.

Mary Kleinenberg and Christopher Merrett, in their interesting book Standing on Street Corners, illustrate excellently the significant part played by the Black Sash.

Women defied the apartheid government and stood firm for human rights for all South Africans.

Our struggle history must be reflected truthfully to be inclusive of South Africans Joan Kerchhoff, Marie Dyer, Nalini Naidoo and strong women of the ilk of Flere Webb and Busi Nyide.

They must be afforded their correct place in our new history, and so must Kleinenberg and Merrett.
