ESTABLISHED in 1967, the Edendale Football Association (EFA) is one of the first non-racial singular football associations in the country.

The association, which has 200 players, is one of the biggest leagues in Edendale and plays every weekend in and around the Edendale area.

EFA liaison officer Sanele Vilakazi said the association is an amateur league affiliated to the Safa uMsunduzi Football Association, which was established to develop community members, and to use sport as a tool to fight against social ills.

“Our football is true grassroots football where players play on local grounds with all but the highest divisions regionalised. Previously there had been a number of racially divided football bodies.

“The association was officially accepted into Safa uMsunduzi in 1990, affording teams to play provincially.” Vilakazi said the association is responsible for controlling Edendale football teams and most football leagues in Edendale and also major cup competitions in the area.

“Our emphasis is not only on the game, but playing in the spirit of football and promoting fair play. We offer players the opportunity to play at a level that suits their ability, and provide a competitive but sporting game,” he said.
