ANY mattress that helps you sleep comfortably and wake up feeling refreshed, without pain and stiffness, is the best mattress for you. Choosing the right mattress for your needs requires some knowledge of the options available. It is a very important decision as your health shouldn’t be compromised.

It is well-known that sleep is essential for your wellbeing, and your mattress needs to support your body for many years. So, how do you know which is the best mattress for you? This is a question many have wondered, particularly since we now have so many options.

Here are some tips to consider when buying a new mattress:

• research the options available;

• if you have any health problems, speak to your health practitioner or specialist such as a physiotherapist, chiropractor or orthopaedic surgeon;

• firm mattresses aren’t always better for your back - there is a difference between firm and support.

You want support with a comfortable feel;

• ensure you are using the correct pillow for your body;

• adjustable beds are a great option as they offer a range of positions to keep you comfortable;

• protect (and insure if necessary) your investment - avoid eating and drinking on your mattress;

• test-drive the mattress in store before buying by lying on the mattress for at least 15 minutes; and

• shop at a reputable store.

THE average child has quite a busy schedule, including school, extra mural activities, homework and errands at home, plus social and play time. By the end of the day, their bodies are exhausted and in need of a good rest. Children should sleep about 10 to 12 hours a night in order to recharge their bodies and brains.

Many parents spend considerable time and money on good-quality accessories, such as an ergonomical desk and chair, the correct shoes (especially for sports) and the additional equipment required for these. Few parents, however, consider how their children’s bodies rest each day in order to recover from the day’s activities and to prepare for the next day.

A growing spine is very flexible and more adaptable to stress in children. However, this flexibility makes their spine more susceptible to more permanent deformative issues when placed under pressure for long periods of time, such as 10 to 12 hours of sleep per night on an unsupportive mattress.

A good-quality mattress and pillow will provide the support for your growing children. The mattress should conform to the body, giving your children a restful and rejuvenating sleep. — Supplied
