Indondo to honour former press ombudsman

2015-08-20 06:00

THIS year’s Indondo Community Achievements Awards will honour veteran journalist and current director of the South African Council, Joseph Tloloe, at a glitz event at the Imperial hotel on 29 August.

For the first time, honourees of the Indondo Community Achievements Awards will honour other honourees. The annual awards were founded by Reverend Caleb Mbokazi seven years ago in a bid to honour unsung heroes who excel in various fields.

Mbokazi said this year they have decided not to open up nominations to the public, but have chosen instead to honour people who were on last year’s list.

“This year’s awards will be quite different from previous years. While honourees will be called on stage to receive their awards, they will also be called back to honour others.

“As we are also celebrating seven years since these awards were founded, instead of reading the roll of honour from the previous year, we will start from the year which these awards were founded.

“They will provide a reflection of where we come from and who we are.”

Mbokazi said they have decided to honour Tloloe for his legacy in the journalism sector.

Tloloe said: “This is a very fascinating route for me because in 1977 I spent my time in Pietermaritzburg and Howick detained by security police. I’m humbled to be going back to the same place, but to be honoured by an organisation that I respect.”

Other honourees include Zanele Dlamini of Lunzul’ Uthando, Saul Msane Heritage Trust, Mandla Mntomuhle Khwela from Radio Ikhwezi, Nana Makhanya from Umgungundlovu 107.6 FM, Uncle Bundy, PMB Autism Centre, John de Jesus, Phillip Gumede Foundation, Sam Mkhwanazi, Judge Justice Vuka Shabalala, Dr Sipho Nzimande, Professor Otty Nxumalo, Ellias Sibisi, Reverend Maurice Sipho Nkosi, Oscar Zondi, Lydia Mzoneli, Vusamazulu Credo Muthwa, Dr Frank Mdlalose foundation, Dalton Skhumbuzo Sithole, Reverend Hawu Mbatha, Hlengiwe Mhlaba, Dr Griffiths Khanyile, Reverend Dr Hosea Sandanezwe Alex Fakude, Hubert Sishi and Doli Olga Nxumalo
