Inkosi Mchunu, a great inspiration

2015-09-10 06:00

I SEND condolences to the AmaNguni clan in Msinga on the loss of our chief and inkosi, Simakade Mchunu. I observed his leadership with great admiration.

The inkosi was often faced with faction fights in his villages and always resolved those issues. Recently, he prevented bloodshed at Othulini village when he got opposing factions to sit together and talk peace.

He was a great intellectual, a thinker, listener, leader and friend.

He advised King Cyprian Bhekuzulu Zulu and the current King Goodwill Zwelithini.

Mchunu was respected across KwaZulu-Natal and amakhosi in the province. Traditional leadership is seen as outdated, primitive and ineffective however, his leadership proved that this institution works.

In South Africa we demonise local culture but lay out red carpets to accept and warm up to kings and queens of other lands.

So I bow my head, raise my hands and say: “Bayede Mnguni.”

May your soul rest in peace. You may be gone, but you remain an inspiration and your leadership abilities shall be continue to be a torch to light the path to liberation and espousing of ubuntu-botho, the art of being human.
