DESPITE speculation that Maritzburg United coach Steve Komphela will leave the team to join one of the Soweto giants, the club has dismissed this as “baseless rumours”.

The allegations started doing the rounds towards the end of the season pointing the Free State-born head coach in the direction of the City of Gold and joining Orlando Pirates.

The Team of Choice spokesman Brian Zuma this week told Echo from London that there is no need for United’s followers to panic because there is no truth in the allegations.

Zuma is on a business trip with the club’s chairman Farouk Kadodia and team manager Quinton Jetto.

The former Msunduzi Municipality spokesman says the allegations about Komphela are not new and are re-surfacing for the umpteenth time.

“Maybe it is now for the third or fourth time, and in fact I lost count. They said it many times and I just wonder why our head coach is always alleged to be attached to other PSL teams.

“The rumour mill has been has hiring, recruiting and firing Khompela all over the country,” said Zuma.

Zuma says his management is fully behind the coach and trust him because he is still officially committed to the club.

“On behalf of Maritzburg United, we assure our supporters and the City of Choice residents that Komphela is still our coach, still contracted to the club and will be in Maritzburg or with us next season,” said Zuma.

Although recently there have been rumours that Komphela will be joining Pirates, early in the season he was also alleged to be joining Chippa United owned by Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi.

According to some Johannesburg-based publications, the former Bafana captain is one of the favourites to take over the coaching reins at Parktown next season with Eric Tinkler expected to finish his role as caretaker coach.

“We read stories in the newspapers about this, but the truth is Steve has another year remaining on his contract with us,” United’s manager Jettoo told one of national magazines
