Lack of burial space causes concern

2015-09-24 06:00

THE Msunduzi Municipality’s community services deputy municipal manager, Boniwe Zulu, said that municipal management would have to allow people to use their backyards for burials if additional suitable land is not found soon. Zulu told Executive committee members as a desperate plea for the matter to be solved.

“If we do not find land, we will have to use our backyards for burials.”

She said currently people use road reserves at the Mountain Rise Cemetery on Chota Motala Road for burials.

A report from community services department states that every week there are 50 burials in the Msunduzi area, amounting to about 200 burials per week and 2 400 a year.

The deputy municipal manager for economic development Dr Ray Ngcobo said they worked with experts in compiling a geo-technical analysis report to identify suitable land.

The investigation for both private and municipal cemetery sites show that 20% of the land is suitable for burials, 40% is partially suitable because of large rocks at shallow depths and 20% is totally unsuitable.

Exco member Thulani Xulu said that council should not politicise the issue of burials.

“We are burying on road reserves and that is not right. We need a dignified burial site.”

Mayor Chris Ndlela proposed this item be removed from the Exco agenda.

Currently, there is no available space for new blocks and burials are being conducted on road reserves hectares. Mountain Rise Cemetery opened in the 1920s and has more than 67 000 grave plots
