Let’s not promote hatred of one another

WHAT is happening in our beautiful country regarding the destruction of colonial and apartheid statues at this juncture of our history is wrong.

The statues should serve to remind us of past generational figures prior to our times and even the existence of our forefathers.

I have never seen all the colonial or apartheid figures in question, I have only read about them.

The ways employed in dealing with removal of statues is totally wrong and might have dire implication for us as a diverse nation. It is taking us back in terms of multicultural heritage.

I wish Echo, as a people’s paper, would conduct research and find out from the young what their opinion is and what is going on in their mind.

As far as I understand, this issue needs special attention from relevant authorities.

They must deal with it accordingly to avoid racial divisions among South Africans. As young as I am, I would like to see South Africans always at peace with each other as Mandela would have liked to see happening.

Those statues played a significant role to where we are now, so I believe they should be kept in a certain place so that whomever wants to remind him or herself about them can go there.

The fundamental messages that come with them are more important than it is thought by others.

History is part of development. Wherever you go, there is history. Let’s not destroy what is ours, we should protect it and preserve it.

Let’s not provoke our ancestors by promoting hatred of one another.
