Library’s ‘American Corner’

THE Msunduzi Bessie Head Library­ recently signed and renewed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with American Embassy and hosted United States Consul General Frances Chisholm.

Over the past decade the American Corner has reached thousands of people through a range of programmes. HIV/Aids awareness speaker programmes, poster contests, essay writing, and other programmes and competitions that have been well received by local schools.

In 2005, the municipality signed the MOU with the United States Embassy with the view of establishing an American Corner in the Bessie Head Library.

The American Corner in the library is equipped with desks, furniture, computers, shelving, displays, a TV, a large range of periodicals and books supplied by the American Embassy.

“We are very happy to be renewing our long-standing agreement with the American Embassy and look forward to working with them in the future and continuing to promote excellence,” said councillor Manilal Inderjit.

Public Affairs Officer of the U.S. Embassy, Mark Carr said they were impressed with the progress and the state of the American Corner at the library.

“This is one of the best managed corners.”

Chisholm said she was happy to be representing the U.S. Embassy in renewing the MOU with the library and the municipality
