Maritzburg United assess Zimbabwean striker

2015-07-02 06:00

MARITZBURG United have again turned to Zimbabwe as they hunt down a replacement for Terrence Mandaza with highly-rated forward Evans Rusike arriving at the club Tuesday for an assessment.

Rusike – who turned out for The Warriors at the Cosafa Cup and also scored against Comoros in a Chan qualifier last week – will link up with Maritzburg for a week-long trial.

The towering forward (23) has already scored four goals this season while turning out for Hwange in the Zimbabwe PSL and has been brought to the Team of Choice as a potential replacement for another Zimbabwean target-man Mandaza – who has since left the club after his contract was not renewed.

Rusike arrives backed by a good recommendation from his club who believe that he is destined to make a huge impact in the PSL – which explains why three clubs have been chasing him since spotting him at the Cosafa Cup.

His representatives have confirmed he is already in Pietermaritzburg.

The trial run with United means Rusike will now miss the second leg of the Chan qualifiers against Comoros this weekend.

Maritzburg already have another Zimbabwean Khumbulani Banda on their books.

Meanwhile former Bidvest Wits midfielder Sandile Sibande is on trial at Maritzburg United in the hope of earning a contract.

The 27-year-old is a free agent after spending last season on loan at Moroka Swallows from Wits.

“He only arrived here two days ago and is training with the team, and we will make an assessment next week,” United’s operations manager Quintin Jettoo confirms to

Zimbabwean forward Evans Rusike and former Orlando Pirates forward Rudolf Bester are also being assessed by the Team of Choice.

Meanwhile, the club is expected to announce their new coach today following the departure of Steve Komphela to Kaizer Chiefs._–
