TRIBUTES poured in following the news that popular Maskandi artist, Mtshengiseni “Ndidane” Gcwensa, had died this week.

Gcwensa (39), from Msinga, died in hospital in Dundee following a long battle with an undisclosed illness. Gcwensa, also known as iThwasa Langempela, was a solo artist and part of the group, Amageza Amahle.

He won several music awards, including nine South African Traditional Music Awards (Satma).

He was previously involved in a long-running feud with another Maskandi artist, Kwakhe Mgqumeni Khumalo, who died following short illness a few years ago.

Former Ukhozi FM station manager Bhodloza Nzimande said he was saddened by the death.

Nzimande, while still at Ukhozi FM, banned Gcwensa and Khumalo from the airwaves after their feud allegedly led to violent clashes involving their fans.

“We have just lost another artist, David Masondo of the Soul Brothers. These are talented people who made their mark in the industry.”

He said Gcwensa was a hard-working artist.

Department of Arts and Culture head Sibongile Nzimande said: “It is always a tragedy when we lose one of our legendary artists who helped preserve and promote KZN’s diverse culture. Gcwensa’s passing is a huge loss to the music industry, as his music was enjoyed by both young and old,” added Nzimande
