Moral upliftment, not condoms

2015-06-25 06:00

MOST definitely, the issue of teenage pregnancies can no longer be ignored but the proposal to issue free condoms at primary or even at high schools is unacceptable.

I believe condoms should not be distributed in schools as a way of intervention in the prevention of teenage pregnancies in schools.

The condom is not the solution. We are sitting on a time bomb and hope to neutralise it with a condom. Abstinence should be promoted and is the natural solution.

Pupils should be encouraged to abstain from premarital sex and save that phase of their lives for the partner they choose to spend the rest of their lives with, and with whom they wish to have children.

This might sound very idealistic but if it was nationally promoted and adult role models espousing this ideal motivated pupils to follow suit, it would make a difference.

An earnest effort should be made by every citizen to re-establish the moral code of conduct regarding males and females in homes and society, in rural settlements and urban areas.

Our teenagers need an effective and quality education that helps them to delay sex to after marriage, value their bodies, protect their well-being and prepare them to make sensible and responsible life choices.

Instead of providing funding for condoms, the Department of Education should rather approve more money for quality education.
