New cemetery for Msunduzi recommended

A NEW cemetery is on the cards for Msunduzi following the completion of a geo-technical investigation which was completed in support of a new cemetery on land on Lamonts Vale Farm.

Seventy hectares of land was offered to the municipality for building a cemetery. The property is situated along Richmond Road, in the vicinity of the Fox Hill area and forms part of the South East District Local Area Plan which has been identified for future growth and development.

In addition to the proposed municipal cemetery, the property owners plan to establish a private cemetery on the adjoining 25 hectares of land.

The Mountain Rise cemetery is filled every weekend with bus loads of people and many funerals taking place at the same time.

City manager, Mxolisi Nkosi, said that there is a desperate need for another cemetery in the Msunduzi area as burials at the Mountain Rise cemetery have overflowed onto the road reserve areas.

“This land will provide us with space for the next 45 years even though only 60% of the land is suitable for burials,” he said.

The reported recommended that the site be acquired and council approved that the remaining 40% be used for other services, such as access roads and a crematorium
