THE Northdale Stadium will temporarily come alive on Sunday after a long spell due to a lack of sport activities.

Although it’s heart-breaking to see the stadium and sports complex in a state of neglect, the situation might turn around with a legends tournament this weekend.

The ongoing power struggle between Safa UMgungundlovu and one of the oldest domestic soccer bodies, Pietermaritzburg and District Soccer Association (Padsa), is unwelcome as it hampers the development of the local game, especially in the northern areas.

On Sunday the golden oldies of the old Federation Professional League (FPL) lock horns thus changing the gloomy pictures of the once vibrant venue.

Thousands of soccer followers are expected to flock in their numbers to watch stars of yesteryear in action.

Legends’ chairman, Bryan Rupram, this week told Echo that Northdale Stadium will be abuzz when former Maritzburg United and Real Taj stars come home to roost. Rupram says the main game will be between the Northern Natal Fed Legends and Southern Natal.

Former stars, who graced Northdale Stadium from Durban’s Berea FC, Manning Rangers and Tongaat Crusaders, will bring back memories of yesteryear.

Players from Newcastle Dynamos, Jakes Autolot and Estcourt Manchester United are expected to play in the combined teams. The day’s events will start at 10.30am with an opening ceremony.

Entry is free and fans are welcome to meet and greet the former Federation Professional League legends.

One of the former stars and event organiser, Krishna Naidoo, said two games will be played giving fans an opportunity to see Harry de la Cruz, Ravi Pillay, Ebbie Jacobs, Rama Moodley, Lionel “Bhanoo” Mabaso, Mike Williams, Pepe Whiteman taking on Rufus Oakes, Cherry Ebrahim, Fikky Vally, Dees Abdool and Ivan Selvanathan.

A local retired star goalkeeper and Northdale Stadium favourite, Keith “Kiddo” Abrahams, will emulate former Santos, Cape Town Spurs and goalkeeper Farook Abrahams in goals to keep a clean sheet.

The Department of Sport and Recreation are the main official sponsors of the event. Legends will also remember the many players and officials who are no longer with us.

An appeal is made to supporters of the former FPL to come to Northdale Stadium and make it a memorable day.

“We are expecting a full house of soccer followers from all over the country. FPL local teams from around KZN had good support from local circles, so the day will be just about action, reconnecting and going down memory lane,” said Rupram.
