WITH no experience under his belt 29-year-old Mondli Makhaye from Esigodini location in Greater Edendale began writing and directing films in his quest to follow his dreams in the movie industry.

“It all began in 2010 when my parents use to yell at my younger sister who was a Facebook addict. My older siblings would shout at her for being on her cellphone the whole day. I was always there to witness that scene when she would be shouted at.

“I observed how social networks could take over someone’s life. That is when the idea of writing my first film came about. I started jotting down my first movie - Facebook - which came out that year. People were very supportive of it. Then my journey of writing and directing started,” said Makhaye.

Being observant, his second project was a movie about women abuse, called Izinyembezi Zabesifazane. That again did not disappoint, people enjoyed the movie.

“Not a day goes by without a woman or a child being abused. I decided to send the message by writing a film about this. I invited the youth for auditions and they came in their numbers. Again this project was a successful initiative.

“With patience, dedication and passion we received an award last year. My company, Mondli Arts Production, was awarded at the Young Achievers Awards. That encouraged and pushed us to engage in the current project we are busy with. We have another local film that is coming out soon. It is a horror movie called 666 and shooting is ongoing. I am studying towards a production certificate. I was offered a bursary by the KZN Film Commission. To the youth out there, anything is possible. Hold on to your dreams and never give up. Happy youth month,” said Makhaye
