IT’S now official - the Pietermaritzburg-born star defender Mbulelo “OJ” Mabizela has joined a new team. The former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain and former Panorama resident Mabizela joined the national first division (NFD) team Royal Eagles.

The well-travelled defender is one of the popular SA soccer figures to join this NFD side. Others are former Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana star striker Katlego “Killer “Mphela, Dominic Isaacs (former Ajax Cape Town defender) and ex-Orlando Pirates attacking midfielder Khetho-kwakhe Masuku.

Mabizela burst onto the professional scene in 2001 at Pirates. He started his soccer career with Ashdown Young Bucs (Msunduzi FA) and Maritzburg City (old second division Vodacom League and first division MTN League). He also played for Mamelodi Sundowns and English side Tottenham Hotspurs. Last season he played for AmaZulu, who were relegated to NFD at the end of their league campaign in the elite league (PSL).

Maritzburg United’s attempts to bring on board Mamelodi Sundowns second choice goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands, have failed. A few weeks ago United’s new head coach Clive Barker pointed out that the Team of Choice needed to bolster some departments like goal-keeping, right back and attacking midfielder.

Namibian goalkeeper, Virgil Vries, seems to be battling this season between the sticks, conceding 14 goals.

The Team of Choice chairman, Farouk Kadodia, disclosed that the Pretoria-based outfit turned down their request to have Sandilands on loan in the January transfer window.

United played their home fixture at Harry Gwala Stadium last night against Chippa United.

Their next game will be against Orlando Pirates in the Telkom Knock Out on Saturday 24 October away at Orlando Stadium a 3pm.

Full TKO semi-finals fixtures:

Orlando Pirates v Maritzburg Utd at Orlando Stadium at 3pm, Black Aces v Kaizer Chiefs at Mbombela Stadium at 6pm, SuperSport United v Golden Arrows at Peter Mokaba Stadium at 8:15pm

Free State Stars v Mamelodi Sundown at Goble Park 3pm
