Qiniso Zungu’s big dreams

2015-06-11 06:00

QINISO Zungu (23), a drama and performance master’s student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, will be performing at the Africa Day celebration at the Voortrekker Msunduzi Museum Complex on 27 May at 11am.

Zungu a passionate drama student, was granted a scholarship to study at Roseveldt University in Chicago where she excelled and returned to Pietermaritzburg to compete her degree with over 10 distinctions.

She has since been accepted to study abroad once again, this time in London, but needs to raise her tuition money.

Zungu is an all round performance artist with writing, acting and directing under her belt.

She, together with 16 cast members, will be performing her play titled “Where do we go from here?” which is a dramatised dance piece.

“I wrote this play last year and based it on the 2008 xenophobic attacks.

“The themes I touched on were racism, violence, brutality and what the definition is of being an African.

“I kept the play alive because it is so relatable and now, after the recent xenophobic attacks, it is something that everyone should see,” said Zungu.

She added that she has big dreams of going to study overseas to coming back and opening a dramatic arts theatre for people with talent to pursue their passion.

“There are so many people who have talent, but they have to stop studying because of a lack of funding. I want to be able to offer them a platform to pursue their passion.”

Zungu has been avidly appealing to scholarship foundations and various government departments to help her with tuition fees.
