Rehabilitation of water pipeline in Msunduzi

2015-05-07 06:00

RESIDENTS within the Msunduzi Municipality have been urged to use water sparingly as there is an urgent rehabilitation of the water pipeline that started recently and which will continue until August.

The rehabilitation is being done by Umgeni Water.

Msunduzi Municipality acting communications manager Nqobile Madonda said the reason for the rehabilitation is to reduce the risk of failure of the pipeline in the future.

“Rehabilitation work will be carried out during the periods listed below, with supply being shut off for periods of five days at a time. Umgeni Water has undertaken urgent pipe repairs to the raw water supply pipe from Midmar Dam to DV Harris Water Works. These repairs will require that the pipeline be shut down for five days.

“They will then be charged to enable full supply and all reservoirs downstream to be topped up. The shutdown will be divided into six intervals of five days with four to six recovery days in between the intervals to allow for reservoirs to fill up,” she said.

Madonda said there will be water supply from certain reservoirs and to certain areas, but everybody is urged to use water sparingly especially during this period as topping up of reservoirs will only be done after the end of each planned shutdown interval, which is five days.

“Unfortunately, the recovery period to charge up the lines and restore water to affected areas will vary from day to day, sometimes restoration of water being after two to three days. The community is therefore urged to use water sparingly and devise contingencies measures to alleviate the shortage of water during these periods,” she said.

Note that as much as the Msunduzi’s reservoirs will be full, they will not suffice for the entire five days.

The intervals will be as follows:

Shutdown – 13 May to 17 May

Shutdown – 22 May to 27 May

Shutdown – 2 June to 6 June
