FED up with unfulfilled promises that were made five years ago, residents of Ebhodini in Unit 18 are demanding answers from the municipality over the construction of a proper road.

Residents said while there is road construction in areas around the Greater Edendale area, their area remains neglected.

Despite appealing to the municipality through the paper last year, residents said nothing has changed, except that the roads have been filled with gravel, but which washes away when it rains, resulting in their vehicles being damaged.

A resident who spoke to Echo, but who did not want to be identified said: “We are tired of empty promises. We have complained several times and after complaining we were told that a new road was to be built in 2010.

“Councillors have come and gone, but the road remains unchanged. We are in a township, but some roads in rural areas are far better than this one. What is also a concern is that there seems to be road construction everywhere around the Greater Edendale area and we feel left out.” Resident Sibonelo Ndlovu said he is concerned about the state of the road that remains unchanged despite paying rates.

“These stones they put down don’t make a difference because when it rains, they are swept away. We have burst storm-water pipes and since there is no proper road, we are forced to walk in the mud. This has been the case for years and it’s time they do something about it.”

Ward 15 councillor Garnet Mlete said that with some officials from the municipality, they have driven around the area and identified the need for a proper road.

“People do not attend community meetings because this is an issue that was spoken about in February. There are three roads that need to be constructed in this ward, and that area is among them. Building a proper road there is something that is in the pipeline as it has been approved in the 2015/2016 budget.”
