Residents fed up with electricity theft

ELECTRICITY theft has now become just “an excuse”, believe residents who say they are tired of excuses.

Residents in Jabu Ndlovu (Loop) Street are fed up with Msunduzi Municipality who say their electricity problems are all related to the high electricity theft in the area.

“Why can’t the council find a new method and way to sort the problem out?

“It’s always electricity theft that causes us paying residents, to suffer but no one seems to have a long-term solution,” said one resident who asked not to be named for fear of victimisation.

The resident, who lives near the Jika Joe informal settlement, said he has “probably” had electricity for seven complete days in the entire month.

“Every day our lights go off. At first we think it is load shedding, but when it goes on for longer than two hours we realise something is wrong. I have called the municipality about 30 times in the past few weeks,” said the resident.

The resident said the area is sometimes in complete darkness while lights can be seen in informal settlements nearby.

Electricity outages also result in unnecessary expenditure as those affected cannot cook a meal and are forced to buy food, said the resident.

Msunduzi municipal acting spokesperson Nqobile Madonda said the faults with electricity in the lower Jabu Ndlovu Street area are directly linked to the high cable and electricity theft in the area.

“We attend to complaints as they come. When one steals electricity, a fuse blows and it takes time to sort out. Unfortunately, cable and electricity theft is a burning issue within our municipality and the municipality is working hard to clamp down on these criminals,” said Madonda
