SA U23 to miss All Africa Games

SOUTH Africans will have to do without taking part in the next All Africa Games after failing on Saturday.

The SAU23 team failed to qualify for this year’s Africa’s event to be held in Congo.

Most of the South Africans had a lot of expectations for the U23 outfit who thought their earlier qualification matches were smooth sailing.

Bafana Bafana head coach and former U23 mentor Ephraim “Shakes”Mashaba this week said the SA team was “just unlucky and sometimes the game is cruel”.

During the match the national U23 men’s team made a late rally but it was a question of too little too late as they failed to qualify.

Despite winning 1-0 in the second leg at Dobsonville Stadium they could not overturn a 2-0 deficit they suffered in Khartoum a fortnight ago. It was a disappointing end for the U23.

They put tremendous pressure in the dying minutes of the second half and got the opening goal of the day, but time was not on their side to add the all-important second goal.

The All-Africa Games, sometimes called the African Games or the Pan African Games, are a continental multi-sport event held every four years, organised by the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa.

All of the competing nations are from the African continent.

The first games were held in 1965 in Brazzaville­, Congo.

The International Olympic Committee granted official recognition as a continental multi-sport event, along with the Asian Games and Pan American Games.
