THE 2015 SABC Crown Gospel Awards are different from other years as new categories have been included.

The awards are the brainchild of Zanele Mbokazi, a former UKhozi FM presenter. Entries for nominations were closed today, 1 October, said publicist and media specialist Wendy Sithole.

Sithole said one category that has been added is “Best Album”.

The “Salt Award” has also been added, however, it is not open for nomination. The winner in this category will be earmarked. He or she is an individual who is not a gospel singer, but who is making a difference in the kingdom. He or she must be a person who uses his or her talents or skills to help others. In this category age is not an issue,” said Sithole.

Sithole said the awards have gone from strength to strength.

“… From the number of entries received every year to the level of performances and creativity on the day’s production. Since the introduction of ‘the Best of Africa’ category, the Crowns have expanded to countries outside South Africa. It’s safe to say, the Crown’s phenomenon is currently international.”

This year’s theme is “The Higher Level, the New Beginning”. The Crowns have grown to 36 categories and the question of who will be honoured this year still remains. The awards will be held at the ICC in Durban on 15 November.

Community Outreach by Church Category - it is not about how big the church is or how they sing or dance, it is about how they show Christ to the community.

Three big categories

Best Gospel Artist - this will be the overall artist who has been consistent this year, exemplary and has good work.

Best Gospel Song - listeners help to choose the most happening gospel song of the year. - Supplied
