THIS week I am very glad to officially announce that the annual Ward 34 Community Sports Day (Eastwood, Glenwood, Panorama, Thembalihle, Cinderella Park, Malivana, Madiba and Jesmondeen) is scheduled for 3 October.

This year’s event will be back at Panorama School grounds after the 2014 one was staged in the Eastwood Sports Complex.

This decision was made just to keep the culture of rotating it. I am very excited because this event will be taking place for the fifth time, so we can proudly say Ward 34 residents will be celebrating the fifth anniversary of their own community sports day.

Every year and during the event, I look back and think how it all started.

It was just two teams from around Panorama that broke the ice and the only thing available for them to win was a trophy and medals sponsored, by a good friend of mine, school mate and the then district manager of the Department of Sports and Recreation, Themba Ndulini.

It is also good to see that some of the youngsters who were part of the tournament from day one went on to play for the national first division, PSL and Safa’s second division teams.

This year’s Ward 34 Community Sports Day will be bigger, more exciting and colourful. We want to make sure we go all out to attract residents from around Ward 34.

It is always important for our community to feel wanted and be part of it.

This year we are also going to allow nearby Msunduzi wards to participate.

Our golden oldies (retired players) or legends will also come to the party. I am glad that most of them are involved in the social and over-35 official leagues.

We are also introducing a new dimension to the 2015 event and I can assure you it will the highlight and is expected to attract a lot of eyes and participants.

This year’s tournament won’t only concentrate on sporting events, it will also offer the community a place to exhibit whatever they can offer or make.

If some residents are dressmakers, fashion designers, caters, welders, builders, whatever, come along and put up your stalls to show your community what you are doing.

One of our of old sponsors, Poobie Naidoo Sports, is already on board and helping us out. We still need more business partners, funders and sporting friends to join hands.
