Shooting the Breeze

I MUST say I was very happy to hear that the Hillview FC Easter tournament at Newholmes grounds was going to take place again this year. I believe this well-organised event has become one of the crowd pullers.

I remember many years ago when one of the long serving and hard working members of Pietermaritzburg and District Soccer Associations (Padsa) Kay Parus and a few others pulled out from this organisation and started their own event away from Northdale Stadium.

I was also there to support them and also attended their event from day one. Although I was told or understood that there were a few differences between Padsa officials and Hillview FC management at that time, I personally did not see Parus and his group as rebels or a splinter organisation.

I saw a competition and another development of our local soccer. I also saw more options for players, teams and local media houses. I actually still have a picture that I took during the first tournament at Newholmes grounds of a certain junior team from Glenwood.

The two players that I remember in the photo are Brendan Bezuidehout and Papi Petersen, who were still very young and playing for the under 12 side. By the way these two players are grown up men now and one of them is happily married.

This week I was very disappointed when I heard that the same Hillview FC Easter tournament allowed one of the local professionals PSL and Chippa United player Enver Wiltwer to play for Hillview Old Boys. Why allow a professional to come compete against amateur players? It was also alleged that a certain player was given marching orders (red card) during the games but was later allowed to carry on playing after paying a fine.

So in short, he paid money to clear his name and to be re-instated into the event. Oh what a mistake!

As event organisers, Hillview FC officials were just too wrong and out of line to change or overlook the red card issued by the referee for a disciplinary reason, just to make money, if all this is true.

I believe events like these are not money making scheme but the development of the local game and an exercise to unearth unknown talent.

I am also aware that Hillview FC opponents and certain unhappy officials out there on the opposite side may cook up some negative stories or look for faults in the event, just to paint a black picture.

I would like to profer a platform to Hillview FC officials to come out clean, explain and give us a fair and honest answer about what exactly happened. My e-mail address is or 083 521 9553
