ORLANDO Pirates legend Lucky Lekgwathi has come out on top in a vote to find the greatest ever leader in South African football.

KickOff and Scottish Leader, one of the world’s favourite blended Scotch whiskies, started the voting last month and immediately it looked like a two-horse race between former Bafana Bafana captains Lucas Radebe and Neil Tovey. However, The Ghost soon found his voice and opted for the man who led them to an historic “double treble” in 2011 and 2012.

Radebe finished over 2 000 points further back, with Tovey a further 1 000 adrift. John Moeti and Brian Baloyi make up the top five.

Congratulations to Emmanuel Nkuna, who will join Lekgwathi and KickOff editor Richard Maguire for an all-expenses-paid evening’s entertainment, courtesy of Scottish Leader.

Final point standing

Lucky Lekgwathi 7 678

Lucas Radebe 5 326

Neil Tovey 4 360

John Moeti 3 710

Brian Baloyi 3 242

John Moshoeu 3 220

Andre Arendse 2 878

Shaun Bartlett 2 688

Aaron Mokoena 2 676

Ricardo Katza 2 628

Daniel Madau 2 562

Tinashe Nengomasha 2 456

Lekgwathi thanked the club’s fans for the Carling Black Label Cup votes he has received despite not playing this season.

With slightly over a month remaining before the pre-season game against Kaizer Chiefs, football fans have been voting in numbers for their favourite players and the starting line-ups have been constantly changing.

Despite not featuring during the 2014/15 season, last week Lekgwathi was in the Pirates defence alongside Happy Jele, Thabo Matlaba and Rooi Mahamutsa. But with over 18 000 votes, Siyabonga Sangweni has overtaken him.

“I will always be grateful to our club supporters for the support they showed me,” Lekgwathi tells

“I haven’t kicked a ball for over a year, but fans are still showing me love. Even supporters from other clubs are supporting me. No matter what happens in my future, I will always be grateful to them.”

New signings and returnees for both clubs have been added to the squad lists – Siyanda Xulu, Camaldine Abraw, Bongani Ndulula, Keegan Ritchie and Lucky Baloyi for Chiefs and Filipe Ovono, Tendai Ndoro and Gift Motupa for Pirates.

On Chiefs’ side, defenders Molomowandau Mathoho and Morgan Gould as well as new signing Daniel Cardoso will miss the Carling Black Label Cup as they are recovering from injury.

The Carling Black Label Cup will take place at FNB Stadium on 1 August 1, kicking off at 3pm.
